The Full Moon Party Up-Leveled My Life

To say I wasn't prepared for the massive opening of my consciousness, would be an understatement. The magic mushrooms in Thailand were a time-honoured tradition the native Thai people used for time eternal. These small islands in Thailand were home to 'indigenous' Thai people, some whom had never been off the island. The cup of mushroom tea found its way to me, with floating mushrooms on top and a strange scent. Mark and I sipped slowly until most of it was gone. The altering of my consciousness began almost immediately, taking me into a deep examination of the moment then thrusting me out into expansiveness.
We secured our bungalows with tiny locks, checked to make sure we had water, money, gum and the lock keys, haha, then walked over the soft sand to a truck almost full of foreigners waiting for departure. We excitedly hopped in to join the others, then we were driven over the narrow winding hills that lead along the south side of Ko Phangan to Haadrin beach - the site of the festivities.
Apparently, drinking mushroom tea at the full moon party was a tradition on this island. And the truck taxis, full of tourists burgeoning out of the truck bed, gunned it up and down the narrow roads, gravel flying and engines racing along the edge of steep jungle cliffs. The trucks would back up before a steep incline, right to the edge, then gun it to make it up to the top of the next incline. The mushrooms had started to kick in and I panicked at the turmoil. I jumped out of the back of the truck. Someone pounded on it to let the driver know to stop, and Mark quickly jumped out alongside me. "Kid, you have to get back in the truck." "I don't want to die, Mark," I lamented, my head swimming in delusory visions. "It will be okay. Come on. Let's go." I reluctantly boarded, praying for my safety and trying to envision the celebrations ahead.
Finally, we arrived safely. But my head was spinning. All of a sudden, I felt an aversion to Mark's energy, and I said so. He trodded off in another direction and as I turned around, I bumped into a new guy to the bungalows named Derek, a younger man who smiled to see me. He had just lost the crowd he had come with. We immediately decided to sit on the sand together and watch the unfolding. He had been drinking a bit of beer, and soon was enthralled with my musings of the events unfolding around us, riveted to my interpretation of human behaviour. We sat for hours in conversation, our eyes widening with this new expansive perspective. It was the perfect evening for me - having an interested ear instead of Mark who often tried to 'bring me back to reality.' It was a perfectly calm and collected evening of conversation and fireworks, while watching the others wander around and swim at the shore.
The humans we watched appeared to be on a stage of their own making - giving main character energy - and I could plainly see their motives and thought processes. I watched a man wiggle closer to a woman on the sand, who turned away. Then a drunk man on the beach search for friendly faces, and a woman seemingly struggling to belong to a group of women. We were incognito but focused and quietly discussed the happenings, learning, observing and quietly remarking.
Finally, it was like the tent of our attention came down and we knew it was done. We ended up leaving in the early am, exhausted from our explorations. I hadn't seen Mark again, but when we returned to the bungalows he was already in his, fast asleep. Interesting turn of events, I thought.
A couple of days later, Mark decided he would leave the beach. It had become boring for him, he said, while my research into human consciousness had new life breathed into it with Derek as my constant companion. Derek was thrilled and delighted with my incredible insights, a far cry from the pub chatter he had been used to back in Jersey, England. A new friendship was forged, and a new adventure had begun.
I called my parents and reassured them that I had made new friends, and told them Mark was leaving. He and I hugged with no hard feelings. It had been one heck of an adventure for our souls and we parted on good terms. We continued our journeys independently.
