After the Full Moon Party

After the party, I had found stillness in myself like never before. It all made sense. Life was a dance on stage and we made up all the parts. I could examine things close up like a microscope, or I could step back and examine the stars like an astrologist. It was all there. And I felt like life would be easy from now on.

Derek started coming by everyday and we continued our explorations. Others raised an eyebrow at our four year age difference, and maybe they thought something was going on. But, I held him at bay. I preferred to be cerebral and just explored life as companions. He seemed fine with that.

Our visas were up for renewal and we needed to head to Malaysia to get them renewed. Real life entered. We took a train with another traveller and spent a couple of days in Malaysia together. Then, travelled back to the island which bore the inevitable question - What was next?

I called my parents and they asked the same question. I had tried to find local work teaching but the schools only wanted volunteers. There weren't many options, so I decided the best case scenario would be to take my calm and stillness and see if I could hold it in the chaos of Bangkok.

Derek and I had met some new travellers to the bungalows. A male and female who were just friends like we were. We bonded quickly as they were Canadians. They would be leaving the same time as me so miraculously I had some people to travel all the way back to Bangkok with, by bus. It was a good trip.

My Dad offered me seven days at a hotel in the city, during which time I needed to find a job and an apartment otherwise I would have to go home to Canada. After my new friends left the hotel to fly back to Toronto, I opened the newspaper to search for suitable options.

And low and behold, within seven days I had done it. I had a 2 room penthouse, and a job at a private school. It was a miracle and a testament that life worked in your favour if you set your mind to something and went after it. It also helped to have the deadline too!
